Camping with your kids might be a big challenge to all
parents. But if you properly prepare, your camping will be a memorable experience to
your kids as well as you. Here are some tips you can use.
1.Preparation
Prepare for camp together:
Decisions about camp where to go and what to pack should be a joint venture, keeping
in mind the child maturity. If a child feels a part of the decision-making process,
the chances of having a positive experience will improve.
How to choose a camp for your kids:
Ask the right questions about the camp you're choosing for your child and be sure to
match your child's interest and age to the appropriate camp atmosphere. Gathering
information about the camp will make you feel better about your decisions. There are
lots of camps to meet your interest, price range and schedule. Knowing your options
as well as your child's personality will help you choose programs that your child will
benefit most from. The programs are good to entertain as well as to educate kids.
Resident camp - Most offer a variety of programs for ages from
about 7 up. The majority are coed, but camps for girls or boys only and camps
specialized in an accommodation such as cabin, tents and teepees.
Day camp - Similar to resident camp except campers are somewhat
younger (starting at about 4 years-old) and everyone returns home at the end of the day.
Special Camps and Programs - Campers can embark adventures as
varied as learning how to ride a horse to how to race a car. Find your child's interest
to choose a special camp.
Cost - Fees can range from $15 to $120 per day, depending upon the choice of camp,
the facilities offered and the camper's needs.
2. General Tips for parents
Take several shopping trips before you plan a long trip:
Try several shopping trips before you plan a long trip. Car traveling is one part
of camping. As all parents know, your kids don't want to spend much time in a car.
From short shopping trips, learn how to deal with your kids and what's the best way
to make them enjoy camping with you.
Make them busy:
To entertain toddlers, bring children cassette tapes singing their favorite songs or
reading stories. All Kids love ABC song and twinkle twinkle little star. For children
age 6-10, you can give them a few assignments to make them busy. If they have nothing
to do except looking outside, you probably hear what they are asking," Are we there yet?"
Bringing fun stuff is important in camping with kids. Include cards, some games, easy
craft activities, art materials, comic books, etc. It's also a good idea to bring some
white plain paper for their camp journal. Kids love to draw and color papers. You can
guide them to write daily happening during camp. Camp journal can be a good memory of
their trips.
For good sleep:
For toddlers, make sure you bring a portable crib. Though they will not generally
fit in a pop-up to allow for sleeping, they are indispensable for use out side to
keep your kids from eating all dirt. Kids generally feel comfortable in their crib.
When camping in a pop-up with toddlers, buy one of the portable bed rails (It's not
expensive). These can help kids keep in the bed. Another safe guard against small
ones falling out of bed is to make sure they stay in the bed that is next to a sofa
or the dinette, especially if these are set up for sleeping. That way, if they roll
out, they will only fall onto the cushions of the seating.
